Engineering Job Options: Lead Civil Engineer

Civil engineering is an exciting field that offers an array of opportunities for talented professionals. Civil engineers build the structures that keep us moving and working like bridges, tunnels, roadways, airports, railways, dams, sewer infrastructure, water infrastructure and buildings. They travel both long and short distances to meet with clients, work teams and job sites, and they are part of some of the most important projects in our country.

Required Education and Experience

Like most engineering careers, it takes a minimum of a bachelor’s degree to become a civil engineer. However, a master’s degree is becoming a common minimum requirement – especially for supervisory roles. Civil engineers must be licensed in the states they work in and those requirements vary significantly from state to state, but they all require ongoing education and recertification in order to maintain good standing.

Job Outlook for Civil Engineers

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual salary for civil engineers is currently $84,770.  Indeed’s salary aggregator indicates a similar average salary of $72,834 for current open civil engineering positions in Georgia. It is important to remember that salaries are variable based on factors like geographic location, the size of the company, the responsibilities of the position and the experience of the chosen engineer.

The BLS also reports that civil engineering as a field is expected to grow 11 percent through 2024, which is faster than average for all jobs in the U.S. This is likely being driven by billion-dollar investments in repairing the country’s outdated and crumbling infrastructure.
