Engineering Job Options: Structural Detailer

Structural detailers typically work in civil engineering firms and are tasked with developing the detailed models and drawings engineers use to create the final product. Detailers are sometimes called structural drafters or structural designers, but regardless of the title, these professionals use CAD technology to develop their schematics and play an essential role in nearly every civil engineering project.

Required Education and Experience For Structural Detailers

Structural detailers can enter the field with an associate degree or a certificate from a technical program. Because the job is so technical and requires extreme attention to detail, schooling is incredibly important to learn math, science, engineering, drafting and technological tools for success.

There are also certifications available for structural detailers to demonstrate their expertise to hiring managers. Certifications are often not required for jobs, but they can help detailers become more marketable, especially if they lack real-world experience.
