Engineering Job Options: Maintenance Technician

The job of a maintenance technician can be varied, but they are typically tasked with the routine maintenance and troubleshooting of mechanical equipment. In regulated industries like medical devices, they must keep detailed documentation of their work to ensure compliance.

Maintenance technicians are required to keep machinery operational and ensure that a business is achieving its daily output. Malfunctioning or offline machinery can result in lost revenue for the organization, which makes maintenance technicians extremely important for business operations.

In large organizations, maintenance techs often specialize in one area like instrumentation, electrical work, mechanical work or facilities. In smaller companies, maintenance technicians tend to be generalists.

Required Education and Experience

Maintenance technicians are almost always required to have a minimum of a high school education. Experience is the most important factor employers look for, and that experience can be gained through technical classes in high school, postsecondary technical education or an apprenticeship.

Job Outlook

According to Indeed data, the average hourly wage for maintenance technicians in the Atlanta area is $17.39 per hour. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) cites the national average for all mechanical maintenance jobs at a slightly higher rate of $23.61 per hour. The BLS indicates job growth in this sector will be steady in the coming years. Technicians seeking new opportunities should remember that salary and benefits packages offered by employers can vary greatly depending upon the location, the size of the company and the experience of the candidate.
