Engineering Job Options: Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical engineering is dynamic in the truest sense of the word. In this career you design machines that move people and materials. Generators, turbines, conveyor systems, elevators – they are all products of mechanical engineering. As a mechanical engineer, you may be called upon to work in places where you might get a little dirty, but like most engineers, computer skills are an essential part of your job.

Job Description

Mechanical engineers must analyze problems and design a mechanical solution to resolve them using computer-aided design (CAD) programs. You’ll develop prototypes and test to make sure your design works, and once it does, oversee the manufacturing process.

Educational Requirements

Like most engineering positions, mechanical engineers typically need a bachelor’s degree. Coursework in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology will include mathematics, physical sciences, engineering and design. Programs often include a co-op component which allows you to learn on the job. This will stretch your degree program to five years, but increases your odds of being hired.

Job Outlook

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunity for mechanical engineers is projected to grow 5 percent from 2012 to 2022. This is slower than the average for all occupations, but if you remain up-to-date on industry developments, your job prospects will be stronger.
