Job Description

Project managers take on a wide variety of duties depending on the assignment they are working on, the client they are working for, and the role they play in the overall project. But there are some duties that apply to all projects:

  • Studying the client’s agenda and objectives
  • Creating timelines, establishing budgets, and determining the resources needed
  • Drawing up detailed plans for how every stage in the project will be completed
  • Choosing members of the project team and managing/leading those members
  • Holding negotiations with contractors, suppliers, and other project stakeholders
  • Monitoring projects based on timelines and budgets
  • Reporting progress/setbacks to clients and upper-level managers

Educational Requirements

At the minimum, project managers will need to have a bachelor’s degree in engineering. A graduate degree in either a specialized engineering discipline or in engineering management improves job prospects significantly. Many project managers also choose to supplement their engineering training with business training and pursue MBAs. In addition to schooling, candidates will typically need to have five or more years of on-the-job experience before being asked to manage projects. Candidates can expedite the process by picking up certifications and pursuing other professional development opportunities.

Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment growth in this field is strong if not overwhelming. They estimate that there will be 13,100 more architecture and engineering managers in 2022 than there were in 2012. That represents a seven percent growth. The bureau also estimates that the current median salary for project managers is $124,870. Employment growth in engineering is largely tied to the strength of the economy as a whole, meaning that these estimates could change significantly.
