A computer numerically controlled (CNC) programmer programs the machines that cut, shape, and finish raw materials like metal and plastic into usable manufacturing components. They plot out each step of how a machine makes a part and then convert the information into a language that is usable to the machine. CNC programmers also test and revise machine programming, analyze blueprints and job orders, sequence automatic machine operations and select appropriate cutting tools.
Required Education and Experience
There are several educational paths one can take to become a CNC programmer. There are certificate programs, as well as associate degrees and bachelor’s degrees available in CNC programming. There are also apprenticeships available that include both classroom and shop training. Minimum educational requirements will vary from job to job, but employers tend to focus more on real-world experience than degrees or certificates when it comes to hiring CNC programmers.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual salary for CNC programmers is around $55,770. Indeed cites a similar figure of around $53,000 per year for programmers in the Atlanta area. The BLS is currently predicting low but steady job growth through 2026 at a rate of about 7% per year. CNC Programmers should always remember that salaries can vary significantly from job to job-based on factors like company size, geographic location, experience, and the industry the company operates in.

CNC programming experience in any of the following are required: Panel Bender, CNC Press Brakes, Robotic CNC Press Brake, 3-Axis Router Table, Water Jet, CNC Fiber Lasers, 5-Axis Extrusion Machining Center, Robotic Welding Cells. Knowledge of raw material is also required, as is experienced with PUMA CAM and the ability to pick up new software/CAMs quickly. Supervisory experience and metal fabrication backgrounds are preferred, but not required.
