Engineering Job Options: CAD Technician

CAD technicians, designers and drafters provide critical support to engineering projects.  They are tasked with creating the plans that engineers use to build a project whether it is a machine, a building, or a consumer product.

Engineers provide CAD techs with the requirements for the project, and they take that information and develop drawings and plans with the use of CAD technology. They typically work in an office or lab setting, but may be required to spend time on manufacturing floors or job sites as needed. Successful CAD professionals have strong attention to detail, excellent visualization skills, and an aptitude for math and geometry.

Required Education And Experience

CAD technician jobs are typically entry and junior-level roles on an engineering staff, and required education and experience can vary from job to job. However, most employers want to see an associate degree or CAD certification from accredited programs, as well as hands-on experience.

Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the national median annual wage for CAD designers is $54,170 per year, roughly $26 per hour. The salary aggregator at Indeed cites a slightly different figure for Georgia, reporting average salaries for current openings at around $22 per hour or about $46,000 per year.  Job seekers should remember that salary and benefits vary based on company size, location, and the experience of the individual technician.
