Engineering Job Options: Civil Designer

Civil designers work for engineering firms, construction firms, private industry and government agencies. Under the supervision of engineers, they are responsible for creating the plans that crews will use to build infrastructure projects that can include roads, bridges, dams and waterway structures and more.

Designers must have strong mathematical skills, excellent interpersonal skills and a good eye for design. They are often required to make critical calculations that impact the safety of workers and the structural stability of the project. They typically work in a traditional office environment, but may be required to travel to job sites as needed.

Required Education and Experience

Employers have varying requirements when it comes to hiring civil designers. A four-year degree is usually not required, but most companies require a minimum of a two-year degree from an accredited civil drafting program and hands-on experience. Most educational programs include internships and externships that will give new designers the experience they need to land an entry-level position.

Certifications and licenses are not required, but they are sometimes preferred, and designers can make themselves more marketable by earning credentials that “prove” their experience and expertise. Civil design is also a great springboard for professionals who want to continue their education and eventually become civil engineers.

Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the mean annual wage for civil and architectural designers in 2016 was $54,290. The BLS also reports this field Is expected to grow at an average rate of about 1.6 percent annually. The biggest sector of growth is in engineering services, while government employment for civil designers will grow at a rate lower than average.

It is important to keep in mind that every civil design job is different. Salary and benefits can vary significantly based on job responsibilities, the size and location of the company and the experience of the candidate.
