Engineering Job Options: Civil Engineer

Civil engineers work in both the public sector and the private sector designing, building and supervising major infrastructure projects. Civil engineers work on roads, buildings, dams, bridges, tunnels, airports and water/sewage infrastructure. They work both indoors and outdoors, as they must visit their sites regularly during construction, and travel is often required.

Required Education and Experience

To qualify for entry-level positions, civil engineers must have a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, civil engineering technology or a related field. In order to move into senior, supervisory and leadership positions, engineers must hold a master’s degree and a license, as well. Civil engineering licensure requirements vary across the country, but engineers must typically be licensed in the location where they provide services to the general public. It is not uncommon for civil engineers to hold and maintain several licenses so they can work in various locations.

Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual salary for civil engineers in 2016 was $83,540. It is important to remember salaries are variable, and depend upon a variety of factors like geographic location, the size of the company, the responsibilities of the position and the experience of the chosen candidate.

The BLS also reports that civil engineering as a field is expected to grow at an average rate of 8 percent through 2024, keeping pace with the national average for all jobs. As infrastructure continues to age, and thanks to an increase in the federal budget for infrastructure projects, new jobs in civil engineering will be created.
